Exploring Memnos had been wonderful. It sparkled and shimmered with a purity Kiera had never seen in a city before. Usually, cities were tainted with the dinginess of pollution. Not so for Memnos. Atlanteans took great care in creating an ecosystem that didn’t leave any sort of negative impact on the environment. Even the hovercrafts, or rhedes, as Phoenix called them, were fueled by water.

Atlanteans took their aesthetic to the next level too. The pearlescent buildings rose into the bright blue skies. Glass domed roofs sparkled against the rays of the planet’s sun. Roads were paved in pristine hard-packed white sands. And everywhere, on everything, was etching, filigrees, or other intricate designs. Most of the designs were whirls and swirls that were reminiscent of the sea. From the color pallets to designs, Atlanteans were definitely crazy about the sea and sea life.

Kiera would never forget the shops and stalls they visited. Of course, her favorite was the toy store. Before she’d known what it was, the bright lights and whimsical patterns drew her in. She couldn’t wait to learn how to play the Atlantean games Phoenix had bought for her.

That would have to be put on hold. The day had taken a turn. She was worried about the Atlanteans’ reaction to her mention of the Scavengers—or, as they called them, Scrivians. Phoenix hadn’t elaborated much on what the Scrivians were to Atlanteans except that they were enemies, which made no sense. Atlanteans had been in seclusion for a long time. When had they gained enemies? She wanted to ask Phoenix more about the Scrivians, but since their meeting with the crowd and the reporter, he seemed to be in a hurry to get back to his house. Beside her, he was furiously typing messages on his com. He hadn’t said much on their walk back.

“Is everything okay?” Kiera asked, finally breaking the silence as they walked up to the front steps of Phoenix’s house.

Phoenix stopped typing on his com and looked at her with a distracted smile. “It is going to be. I’m going to need you to sit through a few coms with me and answer some more questions.”

She was willing to do whatever necessary to help her crew, but the little crowd and the reporter had been upset at the discovery that the Scavengers could be the Scrivians. Really upset. Phoenix’s eyes had even grown lighter for a second, almost a lime green color. She’d never seen his eyes change color before. What if her words had made the Atlanteans even more upset? Would it reduce her chances of getting her crew help?

They walked through the hallway in silence. Kiera trailed after Phoenix, unsure what else to do. The Atlantean games were still tucked under her arm.

Phoenix turned to Kiera. “I’m sorry. Today was supposed to be a fun day, and it turned into chaos. Now, instead of games, there are going to be more meetings. This time they will just be projections, and we can sit in the meditation room if you would like.
